Our Approach to Sustainability


Applied Medical is committed to developing sustainable practices to balance our economic, environmental and social impacts.


Applied Medical’s efforts to identify and manage current and future initiatives supporting sustainability are addressed in our Sustainability Plan. By tracking energy usage, water consumption, carbon emissions, and waste generation as primary indicators, we can gauge our progress toward optimization of our sustainability efforts. Our focus is on:

  • assessing current environmental impacts,
  • identifying sustainability targets and goals,
  • providing planned implementation strategies, and
  • encouraging team members' involvement and tracking results.

By concentrating on these areas, we are able to address and consistently reduce our environmental impact over time. Carbon Emissions Reduction

Carbon Emissions Reduction 1
As a vertically integrated company, we conduct all of our manufacturing processes in-house, avoiding freight-related emissions typically associated with outsourcing.
Carbon Emissions Reduction 2
Applied’s sterilization facility is located near our manufacturing operations, which helps decrease product transport and carbon emissions.
Carbon Emissions Reduction 3
Our Netherlands facility utilizes a thermal heating system to heat or cool our building, reducing carbon emissions by 91% in the summer compared to traditional temperature control systems.


Water Conservation

Water Conservation 1
A highly efficient water chiller system provides up to a 95 percent reduction in water use compared to traditional water towers.
Water Conservation 2
An advanced system utilizes waste water generated during our manufacturing processes for irrigation purposes.
Water Conservation 3
In the Netherlands, Applied uses an underground rainwater infiltration system to irrigate surrounding fields and flora throughout the year.


Energy Conservation

Energy Conservation 1
Solar panels have been installed on more than half of our buildings, providing a reliable, clean and independent source of energy.
Energy Conservation 2
A cogeneration system in one of our main facilities reduces energy demand and adds capacity for heating and cooling as a part of the process.
Energy Conservation 3
A fuel cell system provides efficient electricity to many of the buildings around our campus.


Waste Reduction

Waste Reduction 1
Recycling bins for collection of batteries, cardboard, pens, paper, plastic bottles, and aluminum cans have been placed throughout our facilities.
Waste Reduction 2
Applied has converted to form-fit packaging on many products to decrease packaging materials and box size by as much as 30 percent.
Waste Reduction 3
Applied team members have helped prevent the disposal of over 550,000 plastic water bottles by utilizing water refill stations.


Applied Medical's ProTerra® Committee

ProTerra® Committee 1
Applied's ProTerra Committee is made up of passionate team members companywide who promote sustainability and volunteer opportunities.
ProTerra® Committee 2
ProTerra Committee members sell reusable mugs and water bottles to team members to minimize waste and raise funds for nonprofits.
ProTerra® Committee 3
Team members volunteer as part of the ProTerra Committee's efforts to support and organize awareness campaigns that encourage sustainability.
